In
the days since our arrival in Legazpi, you have warmly welcomed us
onto your campus and into your homes, and treated us as family.
What great fun it has been to try your foods, learn a little of
your language and customs, to see your family albums, to sit in
(and even teach) your classes, to enjoy the things that you enjoy
and to explore the beautiful riches of the Legazpi area with you
as our guides. We feel privileged to have come to know about
colorful, vibrant mosaic that is the Philippines through our
contact with you.
Each
of us had our favorite words (mine was ‘kulibanban’), our favorite
foods (Bikol Express), and our favorite memories. For me, as a
teacher and as a mom, it has been watching all you together, the
Filipino and Japanese students, talking, laughing, dancing,
singing and sharing your cultures with each other. What a
beautiful thing that is!
In
closing, I would like to issue a challenge to all of the young
people here: whether you stay in your own country or have the
opportunity to travel abroad, in big ways and small ways for the
rest of your lives, keep this spirit alive. When strangers become
friends, our world becomes a smaller and a more peaceful place.
Thank you.

Shinichiro Uchida 内田 紳一郎 Before I visited the Philippines, I had had a bad image about the Philippines. After I arrived here, however, I found the Filipino people have something that most Japanese people do not have. Surely, there are a lot of problems here. For instance, the gap between the rich people and the poor people, child abuse, etc. But the people’s smiles are so beautiful. I want the world to become a peaceful place with no gaps between people. In the future, I want to be an elementary school teacher in the Philippines. Filipino kids are so cute! In closing, I want to let you all know that I really appreciate your help and hospitality. I could make a lot of Filipino friends and I was so happy to be here. I’ll be back! Mahal ko kayo.

Shingo Miyahara 宮原 進吾 Hello, everyone. At first, I like the Philippines very much. But before I came here, I had thought there are many bad things, such as a lack of order and swarms of poor people. But there are many kind and joking people, so you make me so happy all the time. I think you are so powerful thanks to the hot weather and the garlic. We absolutely don’t eat garlic in the morning, but you have dishes with garlic five times every day. I was surprised! Furthermore, I realized that you coexist with nature and animals. I like this lifestyle. Finally, I need much time to know more about the Philippines. I don’t want to go home, and will come back absolutely. I won’t say “good-bye”. I will only say, “See you again!” |

I have had many precious experiences since coming to the Philippines, and I have three things to say to the AQ people from me. First, “Thank you”, because I was given many kindnesses, many surprises, much joy from all of you. For example, when I had a stomach ache, everyone asked me, “Are you ok?” Thank you for your concern. The second is “I’m sorry”, because I gave you some troubles. I overslept, I was late, and so on. But sure enough, there were many kindnesses from you, so I could be here with a smile. Lastly—and this is very important—“I LOVE the Philippines!” I sincerely appreciate your many kindnesses. Thank you so much.

My name is Motonori Aoki. Through this cultural exchange program, I had a valuable experience and touched Filipino culture. I also touched the kind Filipino people and felt their warmth. For example, when I didn’t understand what you were saying, Filipino people talked more slowly to me, used easier vocabulary and guided us kindly. But when I understood what you said, I could not say clearly what I wanted to, because I was short of English vocabulary. This condition is mortifying to me. I want to be able to catch what you are saying and to answer you clearly, so I must study English more. I want to speak English freely. Finally, I am thankful to all of the AQ students and teachers. I want to be back to AQ University. I love the Philippines! I love AQ students! Thank you, everyone.
